  Gila Wilderness Area
Northern New Mexico
Truth or Consequences

New Mexico has several distinct regions offering a variety of hot water to both residents and visitors.  The northern region has many different undeveloped, free hot springs which often require a hike to reach.  The Jemez Springs area has recently taken off as a weekend getaway destination featuring a bathhouse and several hotels and resorts all plumbed with natural hot mineral water.  Truth or Consequences has over half a dozen spas and  developed hot springs where you can stay overnight or soak by the hour.  Last but not least, the Gila Wilderness offers some truly remote hot springs which you have to plan just right to reach.  Some of them require a full days hike including 40 or more river crossings!  As always, be sure you have appropriate gear, a good map and written directions before embarking on this type of journey.
